Composer's Note:
... Balancing between predictability and surprise, accessibility and inconvenience. Is the natural or organic flow of music bound to predictability? With no surprises, shocking qualities or unexpected occurrences? What is "listenable music" and what goes beyond a comfort zone of a listener? These concerns were preoccupying my mind in the early phases of conceiving the idea of "Polarities".
This piece is an exploration of inner-perceptional and outer-aural polarities: passive-forceful, tension-release, total order-total chaos, consonance-dissonance, pulse irregularity, etc. The principle of polarities is applied on many different levels of composition in this piece starting with distinct emotional states and ending up by affecting all of the basic components of rhythm, melodic patterns, basic structures, orchestration and choices of registers. Time processes are determined by these same principles, the main characteristics being that intermediate states and gradual transitions are often omitted or replaced by the immediate juxtaposition or overlapping of contrasting elements.
