„Perspektive aus dem Osten“: Inspiration durch die bezaubernden Inseln Indonesiens
Inspired by the magic music from the islands of Indonesia, or how the music world changed after Debussy heard a gamelan orchestra in 1889 in Paris at the world exhibition.
Tonight we present two new compositions by Chinese/Indonesian/Dutch composer Sinta Wullur, written for the percussion department of the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold.
Program notes: The influence of the Gamelan.
Indonesian ensemble music is based on collaborative, clockwork-like patterns, where musicians never play solo but interlock their parts, mirroring the societal emphasis on group responsibility. This structure influences Western music systems like Orff and has inspired composers since Debussy heard gamelan at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle.
1) “Ionisation”, Dirigent : Ziqian He (Klasse Prof. Ludwig)
Varese’s “Ionisation” integrates gamelan structures with Western styles, featuring tight rhythmic interlocking and dense figures. Influenced by Debussy and Stravinsky, Varese’s piece reflects gamelan’s collaborative essence.
2) “Balifoon”
“Balifoon” emulates the lively character of Balinese gamelan, using hypnotic ostinatos and gestures inspired by Gong Kebyar. The interlocking marimba figures call the audience to join the musical experience.
3) “Gamelan Jogue”
Combining Indian raga with gamelan, “Gamelan Jogue” features a monodic melody for percussion ensemble. The piece’s gentle sound and rising scales invite introspective contemplation.
4) “Irama”, Dirigent : Ziqian He (Klasse Prof. Ludwig)
Jan Rokus van Roosendael’s “Irama” blends Indonesian music with Western Army Band percussion. Influenced by “Ionisation,” the piece portrays peaceful and confrontational interactions, reflecting the rhythms of Indonesian life.
5) “Kyoto”
“Kyoto” showcases shifting pulses and jazz-inspired harmonics. Inspired by Keith Jarrett’s 1976 improvisation in Kyoto, the piece features evolving rhythms and dynamics, reminiscent of earlier compositions by Varese, van Roosendael, and Wullur.
6) “Ma Mere L’oye”
Fumito Nunoya’s adaptation of “Ma Mere L’oye” for marimba ensemble creates a fairytale-like soundscape. The blending of percussion mimics a string ensemble, offering students a unique experience of musical unity without solos or strict rhythms.
