The New Ash Grove Players take inspiration from the many historic roots musicians that passed through the doors of the legendary Ash Grove Music Club on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles in the 1950s and 60’s. Featured are blues singer SS Jones (vocals, banjo and guitar), Claudia Lennear (singer with Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Ike and Tina Turner, and dozens of others, and one of the stars of the Oscar-winning film “20 Feet from Stardom”, (vocals and background vocals), Steve Moos (vocals, mandolin and guitar), Eric Ahlberg (vocals and bass), David Fertig (harmonica), and Jeff Landau (guitar).
Jeff Landau’s father, Felix Landau, was on the board of People’s Songs in the late 1940’s and worked along with Pete Seeger, Alan Lomax, Lee Hays, Woody and others to “create, promote, and distribute songs of labor and the American people.”
The New Ash Grove Players performed to rave reviews at the Pete Seeger Memorial Concert produced by The Ash Grove Music Foundation in 2014. They recently performed their Lead Belly Tribute show featuring SS Jones at the opening event for the Lead Belly exhibition at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA. This past summer they performed at the Leavitt Pavillion in Pasadena opening for the Chambers Brothers.
