STORYLINE:
The annual Day of the Gaucho was celebrated in Argentina on Sunday with thousands of the famed cowboys turning out to parade through the town of San Antonio de Areco in the province of Buenos Aires.
Every year for the last 72 years, the day has been celebrated with a five-day long festival held in the town, which is recognised by many as the spiritual birthplace of the great Argentine cowboy.
Gauchos from all over Argentina descend on the town to participate in an assortment of events which culminate on Sunday with a parade through San Antonio's colonial-era streets.
The procession is piloted by gauchos - ranchers who much like the North American cowboy have become a national institution in Argentina.
Local mayor Estela Lennon said the event is attracting more visitors every year.
The town of San Antonio, which dates from the early 18th century, preserves a great number of the indigenous criollo and gaucho traditions.
Folk music known as Chamam fills the air and the town's gaucho museum displays traditional gaucho artefacts.
Local gaucho Sergio Fierro said he takes a strong sense of pride in seeing how gauchos traditions are still revered.
Horsemanship forms the backbone of the gaucho lifestyle.
