This popular piece was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1713. It is an aria from the cantata “Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd”, BWV 208 ("Only the lively hunt pleases me"). The cantata is more commonly known as the Hunting Cantata or the Birthday Cantata.
Bach composed the cantata for the birthday of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels who turned 31 on February 23, 1713.
“Sheep May Safely Graze” depicts a pastoral scene. It compares the peaceful life of sheep under a watchful shepherd to the residents of a state with a wise ruler.
