"6's to 9's (feat. Rationale)" by Big Wild

Earlier this year, before the release of his latest album, Big Wild announced he wanted to switch gears a little and shift the focus of his music. Is Superdream loaded with hype future bass bangers like “I Just Wanna” and “When I Get There"? No, unfortunately for the filth lovers of the electronic music world, it is not. That being said, is Superdream full of awesomely produced, full-bodied tracks with that familiar Big Wild flare? Absolutely.
When the album first dropped, we highlighted “Pale Blue Dot,” as it is certainly the most similar to the Big Wild we’re used to hearing. Having digested the new digs for a few months, there’s more. Formerly known as J Beatz (the hiphop producer), Jackson Stell’s journey as a musician should be one of the more respected ones in the game right now. Rather than rigidly plugging his instrumentals into the formula (intro, verse, build up, drop, repeat), Big Wild instead uses the formula as a way to structure his lively compositions.
In “6’s to 9’s,” the formula isn’t what makes the track, it’s the ethereal synths that swell up around the percussion and leave a clean wake for Rationale’s voice to glide along the soundscape. It’s the airiness of the gospel choir. It’s the fact that this song sounds like a modern day George Michael hit and feels like a big breath of fresh air. Lastly, there’s definitely something to be said about how we now have yet another way to say “you turn my world upside down.”
While the “drop” is personally my favorite part of this song, it’s not the only noteworthy component. In fact, it’s just one of the many dope features. In just a few years, Big Wild has grown from a super talented EDM producer into a real musician.
