Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, released on October 31, 1975, is widely regarded as one of the most original and influential songs in the history of rock music. Written by Freddie Mercury, it was the lead single from Queen’s fourth album, A Night at the Opera. With its nearly six-minute runtime and bold, genre-defying structure, the song left a powerful impact on the music scene of the time.

The creative process behind the song began in the late 1960s, when Freddie Mercury was still a student at Ealing Art College. He would keep a piano by his bedside, so he could immediately play melodies he heard in his dreams—many of which evolved into the ideas behind Bohemian Rhapsody.

Mercury described the piece as a combination of three distinct songs merged into one. The finished track broke all conventions of pop and rock songwriting. It begins with an a cappella intro (“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?”), moves through a ballad section, an operatic passage, a hard rock segment, and ends in a quiet conclusion—making up six clearly defined sections with no traditional chorus.

Recording started on August 24, 1975, at Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales, and continued for three weeks. The operatic section alone took a full week, during which Mercury, Brian May, and Roger Taylor recorded vocals for 10 to 12 hours a day. To overcome the limitations of 24-track analog tape technology at the time, the band recorded roughly 180 vocal overdubs. The tape was reused so many times it reportedly became almost transparent.

There was major controversy surrounding its release. EMI Records and Queen’s management initially opposed releasing it as a single, citing its nearly six-minute length and unconventional format, which they feared wouldn’t be suitable for radio play. However, London Capital Radio DJ Kenny Everett defied the embargo and played the song 14 times over a single weekend. The overwhelming listener response led to its official release as a single.

The music video, directed by Bruce Gowers, was shot on November 10, 1975, in just four hours with a budget of £4,500. It’s considered a pioneering moment in music video history. The iconic image of the four band members singing in darkness under dramatic lighting was inspired by the cover of Queen II and has since become a cultural symbol.

Commercially, Bohemian Rhapsody was a massive success. It topped the UK Singles Chart for nine consecutive weeks and returned to No. 1 for another five weeks following Mercury’s death in 1991. In the U.S., it reached No. 9 in 1976, rose to No. 2 in 1992 after its feature in the film Wayne’s World, and charted again in 2018 with the release of the Bohemian Rhapsody biopic—making it one of the few songs to chart in three different decades.

Its legacy remains strong. In 2019, it became the first pre-1990s song to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube and was named the most streamed song of the 20th century. In 2021, it earned Diamond certification in the U.S. for selling over 10 million units—making Queen the first British band to receive that honor.

More than just a hit, Bohemian Rhapsody is a milestone in music history. It broke genre boundaries, redefined the potential of music videos, and showcased the combined brilliance of Mercury’s visionary songwriting, Queen’s exceptional musicianship, and the cutting-edge studio techniques of its time—cementing its place as a timeless masterpiece.
