One of the premier groups from East LA in the 60s, Cannibal & The Headhunters had a #30 US hit in 1965 with this revival of a Chris Kenner song. (Chris’ version appeared on Instant in 1962.) An album followed, which reached #141 on the US album chart.
The song was re-issued on Date in 1966 and charted again at #106. That same year Wilson Pickett issued a version using the same “na, na, na, na” lyric that the Headhunters had used in their version.
The group was discovered by Rampart Records label owner, Eddie Davis. Their member were Richard Lopez, Robert Jaramillo, Joe Jaramillo and Frankie “Cannibal” Garcia.
Cannibal & The Headhunters toured the US with the Beatles and appeared at the historic Shea Stadium concert on August 15, 1965.
