Description
A Very Happy Birthday to the One & Only Carly Simon. This sublime singer, songwriter and author turns 77 today (25 June 2022). The music of this beautiful woman has accompanied my entire pop culture life and I can't imagine not having her collection of songs alongside my journey; such is the magic and meaning of these recordings. From 'Your So Vain', to 'Nobody Does It Better', to 'Coming Around Again' and countless others, Carly's voice is like no other and her career spans a whopping 6 decades. 'Your So Vain' was one of the very first pop songs to enter my radius as a child and it is simply a classic.
So much of Carly Simon's music is timeless, making her equally so. Across her long career Carly has dabbled in various genres; including rock, disco, standards, children's recordings but her most recognisable lane is pop. Whether it be a Carly Simon original or interpreting others words and music, this lady treats music with the utmost respect. It has made her perhaps more of a boutique pop artist than some of her more commercially oriented contemporaries, but her discography is filled with fascinating forays into musical forms. There are concept albums; live albums, a seasonal recording, torch songs; compositions from yesteryear; and plenty of long players that reflect the times she was performing in.
Songs like 'Jesse', 'Vengeance', 'You Belong To Me' and 'Tired Of Being Blonde' are as different to one another as tracks by the same artist can be. Nearly 25 years into her career, Carly Simon won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 'Let The River Run' from 'Working Girl' starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver. Carly has 2 Grammy awards, is in the Grammy Hall of Fame, and most significantly in November of 2022 will be inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. A distinguished career.
For this birthday tribute to one of my favourite singer/songwriters, I have chosen a rarity; one of my most prized possessions: 'Someone Waits For You' penned by the Boy From Oz - Peter Allen and Will Jennings ('My Heart Will Go On' and 'Up Where We Belong'). Talk about a pair of the most romantic songwriters of the era; and sung by the sensitive and beautiful Carly Simon who treats every song as her own. This track was written for the 1984 movie 'Swing Shift' starring Goldie Hawn and Oscar nominated for Christine Lahti, but no nod for the song sadly.
'Someone Waits For You' was issued on a 1995 box set called 'Clouds In My Coffee' a reference to Carly's huge hit 'Your So Vain'. The three CD's on it featured 'Hits' 'Miscellaneous & Unreleased' and 'Cry Yourself To Sleep'. It cost and arm and a leg at the time, but worth every penny and it is a fabulous retrospective of a career still very much in progress.
A very happy birthday to this amazing singer and composer and many many more. Carly, Nobody Does It Better than you! (there's lots of Carly on my channel)
