The Trio vol. 2, represents the culmination of the elaborate
art of the trio. Walton was absolutely aware of this
and was able to describe the constitutive elements of that art
with words as simple as they were effective.
«I had a constant support from Williams’ bass», the pianist
declared, «along with a sense of creativity; if you add this to
Higgins’ contribution, the group’s performance was an actual
example of ensemble execution and not just the work of three
musicians playing together at the same time. None of the
components of that trio imposed his personality on the others:
each gave himself constantly, to give life to the only thing
that deserves the name of a trio: a group made up of three
musicians, not just three musicians without overall unity».
