The Christians of the first centuries spent all the pre-holiday nights in prayers and psalmody, remembering and re-experiencing the Gospel event of the Resurrection of Christ. And now, on the eve of Sundays and holidays, in the evening in Orthodox churches, a divine service is performed, called the all-night vigil, which lasts several hours. It combines Great Vespers with Litiya and Blessing of the Loaves, Matins and the First Hour.
