Description
A tragic song that tells the story of a serf who dares to believe in freedom — only to have that hope twisted into chains once more by the very smugglers who promised to get her out. It’s a song about trust, betrayal, and the cruelty of those who profit from desperation. In Blackridge, not all monsters have claws.
This story comes from my Blackridge Campaign Sourcebook, a dark, intrigue-filled setting with betrayal, moral dilemmas, and unforgettable characters. The sourcebook comes with all the Foundry VTT-ready and printable battlemaps you’ll need to easily run every adventure inside, including the one that inspired this song.
If you want to play out this story at your own table — or explore the many other tales woven through Blackridge’s streets and shadows — you can grab the full campaign sourcebook for $5.99USD here: https://www.seafootgames.com/product/blackridge-adventurers-guide-dnd-battlemap-bundle/?source=yt
LYRICS:
[Verse 1]
They found me at dusk, with the day’s work done,
Spoke of a road where chains weighed none.
Coin for the guards, a candle of light,
Through tunnels where day could never ignite.
I clutched my child, and the dark grew thin,
With every step, hope crept in.
The air was damp, the walls were near—
But freedom sang, and I dared to hear.
[Chorus]
I dreamed of fields where my child could run,
Of mornings unbound in the golden sun.
But dreams are knives in a liar’s hand,
They cut deep when you try to stand.
[Verse 2]
They gave us bread, a blanket’s fold,
Said rest, you’re safe, from the cold.
Yet the door was locked, the night was long,
The sewer hissed with something wrong.
Then strangers came, with a weighing eye,
Pointed at us like goods to buy—
And I learned too late, beneath that flame,
That freedom’s just another name.
[Chorus]
I dreamed of fields where my child could run,
Of mornings unbound in the golden sun.
But dreams are knives in a liar’s hand,
They cut deep when you try to stand.
[Outro]
Chains again, but colder still,
No dawn to come, no sky to fill.
For I was sold while the dark held sway—
A slave at dusk, and at dawn the same.
I collaborated with AIs to make this. The process involves giving ChatGPT my campaign sourcebook or one-shot adventure to read as a reference, then I usually explain the outline of the song I’d like. Next, we write the lyrics of the song iteratively until it feels like we’ve hit the right elements. After more or less editing, I give the lyrics to Ilovesong AI with some music genre tags to generate the actual song. This can take quite a few generations until I’m happy with the emotion and sound of the song. Afterwards, I think of an artwork to symbolise the story and generate that using Midjourney.
