Description

Malaco Records studio was in Jackson, Mississippi and for a one week recording session in May 1970, the studio ended up with two #1 records recorded on unknown artists by chance! New Orleans producer/arranger, Wardell Quezergue, had arranged with the Malaco studios to bring up a couple of artists to record for the week. He brought New Orleans natives, King Floyd and Jean Knight, up to Jackson from New Orleans on a bus. The result, was Mr. Big Stuff by Knight and Groove Me, by Floyd. Both ended up at #1 on the Billboard chart, despite the fact that both records had to be shopped around to various labels before a distribution deal could be worked out. Mr. Big Stuff, ended up being leased to Stax while no company thought enough of Groove Me, to accept a deal. Malaco ended up creating a label for themselves called Chimneyville, in order to distribute Groove Me. Amazingly, Groove Me, went to #1 on the Billboard chart, week of 1/2/71, and put tiny Malaco Records of Jackson, MS on the map for good!
