Euphonic Sounds (1909), modestly subtitled: “A syncopated Two-step” is far from modest in intent or realization. Here, once and for all Joplin shows how to free the piano rag of the perpetual “oompah’ bass. There is hardly half-dozen bars of stride bass in the entire piece. The swinging polyrhythms are achieved by more subtle effects. Euphonic Sounds moves all the way into rondo form thematically arranged: A-B-A-C-A with repeats. Harmonically, it is was one of the most original and rich compositions in the rag form that Joplin was ever to write.
