KPOP DEMON HUNTERS: TOO AWESOME FOR STREAMING!
NO SPOILERS
As always, Netflix leads the Western animation. I don't know if it's just me, but lately the best movies always go straight to streaming, which is a little frustrating because, let me tell you, a movie like #KPopDemonHunters deserved to be released in theaters. My smart TV screen doesn't do justice to the work of art I just watched. It's a movie every Kpop fan should see.
The story follows Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, three idols from the group Huntr/x (obvious K/DA reference) who, in this alternating Korea where demons attack people to steal their souls, lead double lives as demon hunters, protecting their fans through music. Until a group of demon idols, the Saja Boys, try everything they can to steal their fans' souls to feed an evil entity, and our protagonists must face this threat before it's too late.
I've literally been waiting for this film since the first concept art was revealed a few years ago, and after seeing what Sony Animation is capable of with films like Spider-Man: Into/Across the Spider-Verse, The Mitchells Vs The Machines, and Hotel Transylvania, I knew I had to put all my hopes into this project, and I don't regret it at all. From the premise, the beautiful character designs, the soundtrack, the animation, and overall, everything in this film is perfect and a love letter to Korea.
This film is directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who previously directed The Wish Dragon, so it knows about Asian culture, and not to mention the cast, since we have great K-Pop and K-Drama stars such as Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Joel Kim Booster, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, Liza Koshy, and Byung-hun Lee, who we will soon see again as The Leader in Squid Game Season 3. So we have a quality cast and additionally we have Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung from Twice as part of the soundtrack that OMG! I knew that a K-Pop-themed movie couldn't disappoint with the music, and KPop Demon Hunters has the entire OST that any K-Pop fan will love. I loved it, and I know you will too if, like me, you love everything related to Korean culture.
In conclusion, I laughed, I cried, I sang, I fell in love with the characters. Seriously, it's been a long time since I felt this hype for an animated product, and it's a shame it wasn't released in theaters because, seriously, this is the kind of cinema we should support. KPop Demon Hunters is everything that's right with Western animation, and for me, this film feels like a very satisfying break to liven up the wait for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Once again, Sony Pictures has shown us how an animated film should be made. It has everything it needs to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2025, and I hope it wins because it seriously deserves it more than any other.
