Kuchipudi is one of India's eight classical dance styles. The dance form evolved from the popular theatrical art 'Kuchipudi Yakshagana,' called after the hamlet of Kuchipudi in Andhra Pradesh, where it originated. It's done as a dance drama, which means it's done in groups as well as solo.

Kuchipudi takes its name from the Andhra village of Kusselavapuri or Kuchelapuram, where it was first performed by a group of actors known as Kusselavas who traveled from village to village.
Siddhendra Yogi codified and systematized the tradition in the 17th century. He wrote 'Bhama Kalapam' and a number of other plays.
The recitals were known as Bhagavathalus after stories from the Bhagavata Purana became a significant focus.
Under the patronage of the monarchs of Vijayanagar and Golconda, the dance genre rose to popularity.

It begins with an invocation to Lord Ganesha followed by nritta (non-narrative and abstract dancing); shabdam (narrative dancing) and natya.
The dance is accompanied by song which is typically Carnatic music.
The singer is accompanied by musical instruments like mridangam, violin, flute and tambura.
Like other classical dances, Kuchipudi also comprises pure dance, mime and histrionics but it is the use of speech that distinguishes Kuchipudi’s presentation as dance drama.
