Description
Roland Dyens (1955 – 2016) wrote his Libra sonatina under the impression of his first heart attack. He told me about all of this in the course of a wonderful conversation that we had in 2016 on the margins of the International Guitar Symposium in Iserlohn. The opening movement of his “free sonatina” is headed “India”, because it all started while he was in India. He had health problems there that he was unable to explain at the time. We can hear this in his music, which remains indecisive, sometimes loud, sometimes quiet and lacking a regular pulse. The second movement begins with semiquaver triplets. Here the heart attack suddenly strikes out of the blue. Everything now grows slower – the movement is headed “Largo” – and listeners may even think they can hear an ambulance. Only when he was in hospital, Dyens explained to me, could he see “the light at the end of the tunnel”. The final movement, “Fuoco”, describes his newfound life, blazing brightly and energetically. It was at the Villa Villigst in Schwerte, where the guitar symposium’s masterclasses were held and I recorded the present CD, that I saw Roland Dyens for the final time.
