Description
Loch Lomond intertwines the miserable plight of a soldier with the stunning landscapes of Scotland. This arrangement by David Overton is a favourite in concerts staged by The King’s Singers. Scotland had fought many wars with England, and in 1746, many Scottish soldiers were taken prisoner after a crushing defeat at the Battle of Culloden Moor. In this tale of two soldiers, one of them was to be executed, while the other set free. According to Celtic legend, if someone dies in a foreign land, his spirit will travel to his homeland by “the low road”, which is the route for the souls of the dead. The spirit of the dead soldier will arrive first, while the living soldier will take the “high road” over the mountains, to arrive afterwards.
