"Unravel" is a song we've always loved. We've previously released a more laid-back version of the same song, but this version ROCKS! It's a simple song about love and how the right person can make your wound-up, stressed-out existence feel relaxed, at ease, at peace.
The feeling of being "at peace" is a wonderful experience and we think it's underrated. So many people chase love and being in-love or the excitement of new love, but there's something to be said for "peace" and "peacefulness." We live lives of "wake up, shower, dress, work, earn, run errands, pay bills, eat, sleep..." and the simplicity of being still, of finding quietness and calm, is so valuable. The band 21 Pilots had a line in their song, "Stressed Out" that I always loved: "Wake up, you need to make money..." And on some level, all of our lives move from the innocence of being a child with the absence of cares and worries, to the pressures of paying bills and meeting obligations. Pressure and stress are an ever-present feature of adulthood. Calm is rare. Peace, even more rare...
When someone enters your life who brings that calm, that peacefulness into your world, you can't help but feel something powerful for them. Unravel speaks to that person in your life, that love interest who doesn't bring drama or pressure but whose very presence brings calm and peace and helps you to unwind.
What's ironic is that a song about peace and tranquility and about the person who helps you achieve that peace and calm, can rock this hard and be this high energy. We made that choice intentionally. We love to play with genre, with style, even recording a happy song in a sad, minor key. In this case, we re-recorded a song about the love interest who helps "my wound up self unwind" in the most high-energy way we could come up with. The song taps into our love of arena style rock songs -- epic, big songs. The driving electric guitars coupled with the soaring vocal lines, the melody that moves higher and higher as the song progresses, all run counter to the calming narrative the song suggests.
The pace of the song, the energy of this version, is almost frenetic, wild, and out of control. But the lyric speaks to a love who brings the opposite energy into your world. And after you've heard and shared the song, we hope you just can't help yourself but to unravel.
