Description

The "Aria quinta" was an instrumental work written for a duo of violinists and a basso continuo player. It was one of more than 20 early sonatas, corrente and arias dedicated to the patron Duke Francesco I d'Este of Modena. One can see the transition between the Renaissance and the Baroque eras. The "Bergamasca" theme is a melody from a late 16th century dance form attributed to the city-state of Bergamo. However, the viol duet and the elaborate variations on the theme are distinctly early 17th century style in the spirit of later chaconne.
