Description
I set up the video camera this morning on impulse, and did a quick'n dirty recording of "Miss Otis Regrets" - one of my favourite Cole Porter songs. Porter wrote it in 1934 and packed a seduction, an abandonment, a murder and a lynching into 3 verses! Coincidentally, a few years ago, I met the person who first sang this on stage and recorded it. He was a well-known English female impersonator and pantomime dame from the '20s through to the '50s called Douglas ("Dougie") Byng. He was nearly 90 when I met him, but still quite lively. He lived for years in Arundel Terrace in Brighton. He was noted for writing rude songs and was known as "bawdy but British". His comedy song "Mexican Minnie" was banned by the BBC in the early years of radio!
Played in G voicing here with the capo on the 2nd fret, so pitched in A. The tune has an irregular, blues-like structure, with an ever-present G - Am - D7 motif running through it. No separate audio or fancy editing here - just the video straight to camera.
