The North Mississippi Allstars were formed in 1996 by the Dickinson brothers (guitarist and singer Luther and drummer Cody) and bassist Chris Chew.
The band grew up in the myth of Jim Dickinson (father of Luther and Cody, as well as a great keyboardist and producer of the southern rock area) and the bluesman R.L. Burnside; their sound has some ZZ Top, some Allman Brothers, some hip-hop beats and samples, a touch of Cream and some Little Feat.
Their recording history begins in 2000 with "Shake Hands With Shorty", an album of furious folk-country-blues (that smells like Mississippi blues) as rarely heard made by (partly) white musicians: here are some of the highlights from their repertoire: Fred McDowell's "Shake 'Em Down" (with a deeply funky slide guitar reminiscent of the dangerous boogie of early ZZ Top), R.L. Burnside and "K.C. Jones (On The Road Again)", already entitled homage to the legendary Canned Heat.
Overall, 'Shake Hands With Shorty' is a great fun album, great for driving on lazy summer nights by evoking the laid-back vibe of an old juke joint; the influence of R.L. Burnside isn't far away (even for the chosen tracks) and slide guitar enthusiasts won't be disappointed: let's close our eyes and let our imaginations go wild!
