On 12 August 1989, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe, and other rock icons performed at a 12-hour festival in the Central Lenin Stadium in the Soviet capital of Moscow. Officially named the Moscow Music Peace Festival, the event was designed with the dual purpose of promoting understanding between the Western and Eastern Blocs during the Cold War as well as raising funds for the Make A Difference Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at helping people with drug and alcohol addiction. To that end, all of those who performed agreed to do so for free. Concerned as to what kind of influence the Prince of Darkness might have on the 100,000 Soviet citizens in attendance, Moscow authorities drafted in thousands of troops and militiamen to police the event. In the end, the worst they had to worry about was a streaker. One of the biggest rock events of the decade, the Moscow Music Peace Festival was a global phenomenon, with performances being broadcast live to 59 countries.
