Description
"Nature Boy" (1948) By Eden Ahbez (born George McGrew).
A 33 year old fellow comes to Los Angeles in 1941 and gets work playing piano at a health food store/restaurant run by early-edition hippies in Laurel Canyon. He connects with the owners who are following a "natural" lifestyle based on a German philosophy and movement. They call themselves the Nature Boys. McGrew changes his name to eden Ahbez. They have long hair and eat natural foods. Clearly ahead of their time by nearly half a century. While living in a cave in Palm Springs Ahbez writes this song based on his life and what he has learned. This gets better.
In 1947 Johnny Mercer tries to get a tattered copy of the song to Nat King Cole through his manager. Cole eventually sees it, loves it and starts playing it at gigs. Irving Berlin hears him perform it and tries to buy the song, but Cole has decided to record it himself.
To get permission, he has to find Ahbez and he does, where he is sleeping under the Hollywood sign. He records and it sells a million copies and establishes his career as a solo performer. (got it from Wikipedia, but too good a story not to share...hope its true)
