Amy Marcy Beach (1867-1944)

* Born with the last name, Cheney, in Henniker, New Hampshire, USA
* A child prodigy, played the piano and composed from a very early age
* Her only formal training in composition was when she was 14. She preferred to learn by reading texts and treatises herself.
* In 1885, at age 18, she married Henry Harris Aubrey Beach, a surgeon who was 24 years older. Although he supported her composing, he allowed her to perform as pianist only twice a year; and further, would not allow her to teach, nor study with private tutors.
* Her Gaelic Symphony was the first symphony to be composed and published in the US by a women
* After her husband died in 1910, she created a life of performing and composing, and became the foremost female American composer
* Although her output was vast and varied, she is best known as a song composer, having written 150 songs
