Description
Composed in 1817, La gazza ladra (The Thieving Magpie) is a two act opera semiseria, (melodramma) with music by Gioachino Rossini (29 Feb 1792 – 13 Nov 1868)
According to legend, the producer assured the composition of the overture by locking Rossini in a room. When he complete a portion of the wirk the composer would throw sheets of music down to the copyists who then wrote the orchestral parts and complete the composition
The Thieving Magpie is best known for the overture, which is musically notable for its use of snare drums. This memorable section in Rossini's overture invokes the image of the opera's main subject: a clever, devilishly thieving magpie.
