I don't own any rights for the song or any parts of it. Fair use, so don't destroy invasion of my piracy.

As a lifelong Nirvana fan, it's impossible for me to choose one favorite album or song. Love 'em all, I say. But if I were made to do that at gunpoint, I'd pick "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter".

The song was written in 1990, long before "In Utero". In November of the same year, it debuted live in Seattle. The first studio attempt happened on January 1, 1991, at Music Source, Seattle, with Craig Mongomery as a producer.

In October 1992, Nirvana recorded another instrumental demo of this song, this time with Jack Endino at Word Of Mouth, Seattle. The result is released on "In Utero" deluxe edition in 2013.

Around that time the song was called "Four Month Media Blackout" as a reference on the impact "Smells Like Teen Spirit" had on music media. Then working title changed to "Nine Month Media Blackout" as a response to the infamous Vanity Fair article about Courtne's pregnancy and drug abuse. The final name is again about "SLTS" and it's mainstream success.

The final album version was recorded in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio by Steve Albini. After "In Utero" was unleashed upon the world and the band went on tour, "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" normally was a set opener, and as such was played on almost every show left to play. On the very last show (Munich, March 1, 1994), the song was played second after The Cars cover "My Best Friend's Girl".

Kurt called "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" a throw-away song, a compilation of random lines for lyrics.

As for the bassline, it consists of two riffs. The main riff is played throughout intro, verses, choruses, interludes; another riff is for the bridge.

lyrics:

Use just once and destroy
Invasion of our piracy
Afterbirth of a nation
Starve without your skeleton key
I love you for what I am not
I do not want what I have got
A blanket acne'ed with cigarette burns
Speak at once while taking turns

What is wrong with me (x3)

I'm gonna do with what you think
If you ever think at all
Bi-polar opposites attract
All of a sudden my water broke
I love you for what I am not
I do not want what I have got
A blanket acne'ed with cigarette burns
Second-rate third degree burns

What is wrong with me
What is what I need
What do I think I think

Hate, hate your enemies
Save, save your friends
Find, find your place
Speak, speak the truth

What is wrong with me (x3)
What do I think I think

Use just once and destroy
Invasion of our piracy
Afterbirth of a nation
Starve without your skeleton key

What is wrong with me (x3)
What do I think I think
What is wrong with me (x3)
What do I think I think
