Originally released back in 2019, the piano-punctuated serenity of ‘Movement I’ emerged as the latest in one of several collaborations between Berlin-born, now LA-rooted artist Robot Koch and Bordeaux-based composer Julien Marchal, who has recently enjoyed considerable success with ‘Shootout’ - trending at number 3 on TikTok.

The Birds of the West remix of ‘Movement I’ applies a fresh transcendent tilt to the elements underpinning the track’s original version, the California-hailing producer reconfiguring drifting keys and waiflike vocal samples into a hypnotic tumble of glistening synth spectrality, hovering between ethereal lullaby and flashes of cosmic mystique.

Koch and Marchal’s original incarnation of the track stemmed from impromptu creative dabbling, spurred by a recent stateside gig. “‘Movement I’ was first created when Julien was visiting me in LA a few years ago,” Koch explains. “We played a show together and had a session on the piano the next morning where we captured some ideas, including this one. The track was originally recorded for my album Sphere, which was the soundtrack to my immersive AV show of the same name. The show sold out planetariums worldwide and won several awards, including "best immersive experience" at the DTLA film festival.”

Under the Foam and Sand moniker, Koch has recently released the ambient album ‘The Next Billion Years’, focusing on the unfolding environmental crisis through a future-facing lens - the LP building upon a string of gold and platinum records as well as remix credits for artists such as Max Richter and Christian Löffler. Previous live performances have included stints at Coachella, Boiler Room and Sonar Festival alongside a history of soundtracking both television (Teen Wolf, How to Get Away with Murder) and cinema as well as accolades such as winning the German Music Composers Award for 'Best Composer Electronic Music’.

Julien Marchal has similarly enjoyed renown as an independent artist as well as producer, with 3 million monthly Spotify listeners drawn to his contemplative, minimalist-inspired body of work that has included his ‘Insight’ series of albums and recent release ‘Eclipses’ as one half of duo Lissom, alongside British multi-instrumentalist Ed Tullett. With Erik Satie and Burial cited as major influences, Marchal merges classical with modern electronica in a spare beauty that anchors the appeal of his songwriting.
