Saint-Saëns was born in Paris on October 9, 1835. He was a child prodigy and wrote music in almost all the genres of the 19th Century. His marriage in 1875 was one of his darkest periods of his life, but also produced some of his greatest works, including the opera Samson and Delilah. During his last years, he was largely a recluse and died in Algeria on December 16, 1921.
"Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix" comes from his opera Samson and Delilah, the only opera which is still heard frequently today. The song is sung during the seduction of Samson by Delilah.
My heart opens to your voice
Like the flowers open
To the kisses of the dawn!
But, oh my beloved,
To better dry my tears,
Let your voice speak again!
Tell me that you are returning
To me forever!
Repeat to my tenderness
The promises of old times,
Those promises that I loved!
Like one sees the blades
Of wheat that wave
In the light wind,
So trembles my heart,
Ready to be consoled,
By your voice that is so dear to me!
The arrow is less rapid
In bringing death,
Than is your lover
To fly into your arms!
