My friend Matt and I travelled to San Francisco in January 2020. It was our first time in the city, and we got an Airbnb right on the beachfront at Ocean Beach, nearby the Golden Gate Bridge. The first thing we did after dropping our bags was run straight to the water and watch the most amazing Californian sunset. The colours of the sunset were brighter and more beautiful than any I'd seen. We found a sanddollar on the beach and I'd never seen one before. Someone told me that if you find a sanddollar facing upright on the sand that good luck has been given to you by the ocean. It’s a sign you are on the right track. I wrote the piece in a day in a practice room at the San Francisco Conservatory with Matt, and it will be a memory I will never forget – Sarah Elise Thompson
