With ten albums and fifteen charted singles to their career, Sly & The Family Stone has been one of the most influentual R&B bands in late 60's to the mid-70's. The band scored three #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard R&B chart, and Cash Box Top 100; "Everyday People" (1968), "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (1969), and "Family Affair" (1971).

This is the single 45 version of "I Want to Take You Higher", which was originally released in 1969 as the B-side to their Top 40 hit, "Stand!". While "Stand!" did a decent chart run (BB - #22, CB - #23, BB R&B - #14), "Higher" also charted simultaneously, but underperformed on the Pop chart (BB - #60, CB - #67, BB R&B - #24). The following year, the song was re-released this time as the A-side with "Stand!" serving as the flip side. Even though the song didn't make the Billboard R&B chart the second time around, it did make #38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #40 on the Cash Box Top 100.

Ike & Tina Turner covered "I Want To Take You higher" in 1970, which made it to #34 on the Billboard Hot 100, #42 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #25 on the Billboard R&B chart.
