The music theme of Tetris—the one you're hearing right now—is actually an arcade version of the Russian folk song “Korobeiniki.”

Since the game was created in the Soviet Union, Nintendo’s sound designer Hirokazu Tanaka thought it would be fitting to use a tune from the USSR.

He adapted Korobeiniki into an arcade-style track that could work with the limited sound capabilities of the Game Boy. Thanks to Nintendo’s successful marketing of the game, Korobeiniki became known worldwide as the “Tetris Theme.”
