Description
In the last years of the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey had hired a couple of arrangers who would gone on to help rebuild the Count Basie band. Neal Hefti and Ernie Wilkins wrote some great charts for the Dorseys.
Ernie wrote "Swingin' Down Broadway" in 1955 for the Dorsey band, and it sounds amazingly like the charts Wilkins wrote for Basie and Harry James.
The lion's share of the solo space goes to a muted Charlie Shavers, who plays a well-restrained two and a half choruses.
The whole band is driven by guest drummer Buddy Rich, who as usual is astounding in his ability to kick a Big Band.
