THE SANDPIPERS 1966
The Cuban folk song was originally written by either José Fernández, who used it in his radio programs, or El Diablo Garcia . The better known "official" lyrics are based on selections from the poetry collection Versos sencillos (Simple Verses) by Cuban poet and independence hero José Martí .
The original hit by American vocal group The Sandpipers, has since become became the long lived and most memorable version of this most popular recording.
