Toto's 1982 hit Africa is without a doubt one of the most memorable songs from the 1980s. It was written by members David Paich and Jeff Porcaro. The initial concept and lyrics for the song came from David Paich playing around with his new CS-80 keyboard and found the brassy sound that became the song's famous opening riff. He finished the melody and lyrics for the chorus in just ten minutes, and sang the chorus out as you hear it. He spent another six months on the song before showing it to the rest of the band. Paich explained that the song is about a man's love for the continent rather than just a personal romance. He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African suffering. He explains "It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. Africa was the last song they recorded and it barely made the cut for the album because other members didn't think it sounded like a Toto song. Little did they know The song would become a number one hit.
