Hello and welcome to Women’s History Month 2024!
My name is Amy Wurtz. I am a pianist and composer living in Chicago and I want to celebrate all the beautiful, creative, expressive, important, powerful music that women have written. Every day of March 2024 I will post a new video with music written by a woman, and tell you a little about her life and her work.
Welcome to Sunday, March 24. Today we hear from Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, who I had the pleasure of meeting when I first started doing online concerts back in 2020. Žibuoklė is a prolific composer interested in nature, textures, color, and inner worlds and creates music that is haunting, ethereal, highly expressive, and always well-crafted. She currently lives and work in New York and is in demand as an orchestral composer and speaker. You can see my interview with her from 2020 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBcMqSqpOK8&t=0s and the concert where I played her music here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxwPD_aFAaA&t=701s
I am playing only the first movement of her work from 2007, Heights and Depths of Love. The first movement is called Togetherness, and features a very restricted, open harmonic language, with big waves of passionate chords and repetitive figures bursting forth. The following two movements, Disintegration, and Searching for Clarity, complete the cycle, and I hope to perform them in the future.
Please visit Žibuoklė’s website to discover more of her music! https://zibuokle.com/
